Tournament Guidelines

1. General guidelines

  • Absolutely no verbal abuse or physical intimidation of anyone anywhere on the premises. You will be asked to leave and not be allowed to return.

  • Please no swearing, you may be asked to leave the venue.

  • Parents, athletes and coaches should be familiar with prohibited moves for the divisions that apply.

  • Please read our website and social media updates before sending emails.

  • Safety is first; the decision of the referee is final (there are no video replays).

2. Coach guidelines

  • Set an example for your athletes by interacting respectfully with other athletes, coaches, teams and parents.

  • Communicate any concerns calmly and directly to the tournament organizers

  • Know your athletes’ weights and divisions.

  • Coach for your athlete, not against the opposing athlete

    • This is especially true when it comes to kids. Please do not make negative comments like “he’s tired” or “ I want you to destroy...” It should be “maintain posture”, “keep your base”, “keep your elbows in” etc.

  • Register for a coach’s pass at least one week prior to the tournament

3. Athlete guidelines

  • Arrive on weight, clipped nails and a clean uniform that meets requirements. Bring a spare gi, just in case.

  • Divisions are posted 4-5 days before the tournament. Make sure you check your division and your weight class, twice. Changes will not be made the day of the tournament.

  • Do not remove your gi jacket in the tournament area. Please use the change rooms.

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before your division is scheduled to start.

  • Respect your opponent and the referee decisions.

  • Shake the hand of your opponent and your opponent’s coach after your match.

4. Parent guidelines

  • Read Katana BJJ General Guidelines and Athlete Guidelines.

  • Your children will be put into the division best suited for their size and experience level with total concern for safety. If you have concerns about your child’s division, please contact us as soon as the divisions are posted.

  • Please leave the coaching to the coaches; parents only coach if you are asked to.

  • Do not say anything disparaging about other competitors.

  • Keep the atmosphere fun and positive; encourage your child to try their best, have a great time and learn from the experience.
